If you’re buying a 392 Jeep Wrangler, you’re one of two people. You’re either a big offroad enthusiast who wants a vehicle that can tear up any muddy dirt road, or you’re wanting a car that doesn’t get curb rash going into the Starbucks drive-through. Regardless of which type of Jeep owner you are, you’re probably wanting something to scratch the itch of modifying your offroad monster. We’re assuming you’re more of the offroad type, as you did purchase the 470hp V8 model. However, if you aren’t planning on offroading your wrangler, or if you are, we do have a recommendation for the first aftermarket modification. This mod doesn’t require any wrenching, no lifts, no jack stands, and adds over 35hp in an instant.

If you haven’t guessed by our business’s name or the paragraph above, we’re talking about ECU tunes! ECU Flash tuning is an incredibly easy way to get an instant boost of power and torque, with little to no work. Simply plug in your computer, run some programs and boom, instant power. Sounds too good to be true, but we don’t believe in that statement here. Why should you install an ECU Flash tune, how does it work, and what results should I expect? Those are all completely valid questions. By the end of this blog post, you’ll have a clear valid answer to all your questions. Although, if we have somehow missed anything and you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us

“Is an ECU Flash tune the right mod for me?” We hear this question pretty often with people that are newer to the car enthusiast community. While ECU Tuning can be a little hard to understand in the beginning, once you understand the basics of it, it comes second nature. We recommend an ECU flash tune to pretty much anyone that can get one. The reason we recommend it so much is because it’s one of the easiest, if not the easiest, ways to get a big boost in power and torque with the least amount of work. For anyone who might be on a more budget-friendly build path, ECU flash tunes also have the best bang for your buck. The manufacturers purposefully underpower their engines from the factory for a variety of different reasons. Depending on how you view it, there’s extra power there that isn’t being put to use. ECU tuning fixes that issue. Flash tuning works by reprogramming the ECU to change variables like ignition timing, and fuel mapping. Doing this opens up a ton of new possibilities that can alter how your engine runs. For example, tuning can not only add power, but it can also add things like pops and bangs, flames, and more!

For the 392 Jeep Wrangler, we flashed the ECU using our VR Tuned ECU Flash and the HP Tuners platform. We really wanted to grab the extra horsepower and torque that the 6.4L V8 has to offer, and the tune was our modification of choice. With this tune, we can expect to see a heightened throttle response, a better 0-60 time, and a stronger top-end pull on the highways. To start, we did some baseline runs on our mustang dyno here at Vivid HQ. We got a result of 470hp with 470ft/lbs of torque completely stock. However with this application, there are some steps to preform before we begin the tuning process. The ECUs in the Jeep Wrangler are locked from factory, and need to either be unlocked or replaced completely. You can take out your current ECU and send it in to HP Tuners to have them unlock it, or buy a replacement one from them. Our tuning process will also require the HP Tuners Smart Acess Cable. Once we had an unlocked ECU ready for tuning, we can began installing the tune. Pluggin in our Windows PC running the HP Tuners software and connecting our computer to our car via the HP Tuners hardware and the OBDII port.

Once everything is connected, we started running the HP Tuners platform and began installing the tune. If you need a more detailed set of instructions for using the HP Tuners MPV12 Flash software, please look at our guide here. If you’re having troubles with any part of the tuning process, feel free to reach out to us! Once our tune was succesfully installed, we ran the Jeep Wrangler on our mustang dyno once again to get our new power readings. With the new tune, we got a result of 510hp and 515ft/lbs! An incredible gain of 40hp, and a 45ft/lbs with just the tune alone! As you can see from the dyno graph below, we did get the extra power we expected, along with a more linear power delivery band. In conclusion, ECU flash tunes can be one of the easiest and quickest ways to make good power on almost any application.
