Although the R56 Cooper S is loads of fun to drive around town with or hit a canyon road, it is a touch underpowered. For many drivers, the amount of power it has it plenty, but enthusiasts always want a little more. Thankfully, Mini used a turbocharged engine in the R56 instead of a supercharged engine like the previous R53 Cooper S. The turbocharger might not have the same instant throttle response as the supercharger, but it opens up more opportunities for tuning. Vivid Racing’s tuning division, VR Tuned, has developed an ECU flash which squeezes an extra 30 horsepower out of the R56 while still maintaining excellent driveability and reliability. With this ECU flash, you connect with a Windows-powered machine and follow the instructions listed. Of course, if you are local to Vivid Racing, you can stop by our HQ, and we’ll flash your ECU for you. From the factory, the R56 Cooper S makes around 175 horsepower and 177 ft-lbs of torque. After you flash your ECU with the VR Tuned system, your R56 will make around 208 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. On top of the power increase, throttle response is improved, and fuel mileage will also be slightly improved. Our system is self-learning, so if you add aftermarket parts after the ECU flash, the system will learn and take advantage of those new parts, further improving power.
